WHY DOES COFFEE KEEP YOU AWAKE?

The answer is simple: caffeine. Basically, caffeine acts like a compound in your body that tells you whether or not it’s time for sleep. This compound is called adenosine. If the level of adenosine in your brain and spinal cord is too low, it will tell your body via receptors to get ready for sleep. Caffeine mimics the effects of adenosine. Simply put, caffeine tricks your body into thinking it has still enough adenosine – so you can stay awake. Please note that the effect of caffeine differs per person.

WHICH COFFEE GIVES THE MOST ENERGY?

Let’s start with the coffee types. Which type of coffee will give you the most energy? This is different per person, but effectively it comes down to the level of caffeine. The strongest coffee will give you the biggest kick. Coffees with the highest coffee to water ratio are generally referred to as the strongest coffees. As those coffees have relatively the most coffee, they also contain the most caffeine. The most concentrated coffee type is a ristretto – this contains relatively the highest level of caffeine. However, a lungo is larger and thus contains more caffeine than a ristretto. Based on concentration levels of caffeine, these would be the strongest coffee types:

4. FLAT WHITE

5. CAPPUCCINO

6. LATTE

7. LATTE MACCHIATO

The larger the amount of pure coffee in your cup, the more caffeine it will contain. A large Latte Macchiatto with only one shot of espresso will hold less caffeine than a Lungo, as a Latte Macchiato contains a lot of milk.

L’OR capsules contain about 60-120 mg caffeine per capsule. It depends on the composition of the blend. L’OR blends with more Robusta have on average a higher caffeine content. Blends with only Arabica have on average a lower caffeine content.

THE ACTUAL AMOUNT OF CAFFEINE IN YOUR CUP DEPENDS ON A COUPLE OF VARIABLES:

1. The roast

   Dark roasted beans have a stronger taste, but contain less caffeine. They have been roasted longer, so more caffeine has been burned away.

2. The type of bean

   Robusta beans are said to contain almost twice as much caffeine as Arabica beans.

3. The brewing method

   The longer it takes to brew you cup of coffee, the more caffeine it is likely to contain. Longer brewing times can increase caffeine levels, due to the longer steeping time.
