Latte macchiato

The latte is perhaps the most beloved coffee classic in the world. Known for its creamy texture and gentle flavor, it is the ultimate comfort drink for those who appreciate the nuances of a high-quality espresso but prefer it softened by a generous pour of velvety milk.

What does macchiato mean?

But what exactly defines this drink, and how does it differ from other milky favorites like the cappuccino or the flat white? To understand the latte, we must look at the harmony between its few, but essential, components.

What's in a latte?

If you are wondering what's in a latte, the answer is elegant in its simplicity. A traditional latte is composed of three distinct layers that blend into one smooth experience:

1. Espresso - the heart of the drink, usually a single or double shot.

2. Steamed milk - the body of the drink, making up about 2/3 of the total volume.

3. Milk foam: - a thin, delicate layer (about 1cm) of micro-foam on top.

The latte ingredients are minimal, just coffee and milk, but the quality of these ingredients and the temperature at which they are combined make all the difference. At L'OR, we recommend using a darker roast espresso to ensure the coffee’s character shines through the creaminess of the milk.

Latte vs. Latte Macchiato, what’s the difference?

Confusion often arises when choosing between these two, especially when people ask what's a latte macchiato. While they use the same ingredients, the ""soul"" of the drink changes based on how they are poured.

• The Latte: The espresso is poured into the cup first, and the steamed milk is added on top. This results in a uniform, integrated flavor where the coffee and milk are completely blended from the first sip.

• The Latte Macchiato: This is a ""marked"" milk. The steamed milk is poured into the glass first, and the espresso is poured slowly through it. This creates beautiful, distinct layers of milk, coffee, and foam, offering a different sensory experience as the flavors remain separate until you sip through them.

How to make a latte at home?

You don't need a professional steam wand to enjoy a barista-quality drink. If you are wondering how do you make a latte using your L'OR Espresso machine, follow this simple guide:

Step 1: The Espresso foundation

Brew a single or double shot of L'OR Espresso (around 40-60ml). For a classic latte taste, choose an intensity of 7 or higher like Espresso Guatemala. The bold notes will provide the perfect contrast to the sweet milk.

Step 2: Prepare the milk

The secret to how to make a latte that feels professional is the milk texture. You want wet foam, smooth and glossy rather than dry and bubbly.

• Heat: Warm about 200ml of milk to roughly 65°C. Avoid boiling it, as this changes the sweetness of the milk.

• Froth: Use a milk frother or a hand whisk to create a light, silky micro-foam.

Step 3: The pour

Hold your mug at a slight angle and pour the steamed milk into the espresso. Start from a height to let the milk dive under the crema, then bring the milk jug closer to the surface at the end to lay a delicate cap of foam on top.

Why choose a Latte?

The latte is the perfect choice for any time of day. It provides the caffeine boost of an espresso but stretches it out into a longer, more relaxing experience. Because of the high milk-to-coffee ratio, it is also the ideal canvas for flavors like vanilla, caramel, or seasonal spices.

Whether you enjoy it as a morning ritual or an afternoon treat, the latte remains a testament to the fact that when you start with a premium espresso, a little bit of milk can go a long way in creating something truly extraordinary."
