Ristretto
The Ristretto is a very small 25ml cup of espresso coffee, especially popular in Italy. Originally, the word refers to pushing on the plunger quicker than usual in order to let less water through the mechanism, thus creating a shorter espresso. The Ristretto can be described as bolder, fuller and with more body and less bitterness.
Espresso
Espresso means “hurried coffee” in Italian. This coffee is quick to prepare and with no added flavours which is why it is often said that it is the drink of purists or connoisseurs. The beauty of the espresso is that it provides the same amount of caffeine as other espresso-based drinks but concentrated into a small volume of liquid. It is a quick, easy and practical coffee to serve, with an intense flavour (40 ml).
Lungo
Lungo is the Italian word for “long”. It is an espresso coffee with a lot more water (usually twice as much). The result is a long espresso, a Lungo. The espresso coffee is added to hot water which gives the Lungo a strength identical to a filter coffee but with a different flavour (40 ml of espresso, 100-140 ml of hot water).
Espresso Macchiato
The Espresso Macchiato is a drink made from hot milk served in a glass to which espresso is delicately added through the foam on the surface, creating a multi-layered drink. The flavour of the coffee is less intense than in the Espresso (2/5 hot milk, 1/5 espresso, 2/5 foam).
Cappuccino
The Cappuccino is a coffee topped with foam. In Italy, and in all of continental Europe, the cappuccino is usually consumed early in the day, at breakfast, with pastries. It is prepared by pouring espresso into the bottom third of the cup, followed by an equal quantity of hot milk. The top third of the drink is foam (1/3 espresso, 1/3 hot milk, 1/3 foam).
Latte
The Latte is made from espresso and hot milk. The term that we use in English is the abbreviation of the Italian “Caffe Latte” which means “milky coffee”. If you like creamy drinks, this is the coffee that you need (2/5 espresso, 2/5 hot milk, 1/5 foam).
